Qualifications: Sports Science & Applied Social Science (Health and Health Promotion).
MSc Sport & Exercise Science PGCE

When joined University of Kent: 2001 (I was around in the pre-Medway Campus age)

Main role at University of Kent: Lecturer

Areas of research interest / expertise: Exercise for older adults; exercise / physical activity in cardiac rehabilitation; exercise efficiency. PhD study being undertaken into energy cost of walking in a cardiac rehabilitation population.

Favourite things about the role: Seeing hard-working students getting the degree classification they deserve & learning that students are using the knowledge & skills attained during their time at the University in their jobs – it makes it all worthwhile.

Advice to Sports students at the University of Kent: Read lots of literature on your topics of study – it will inform your written & practical skills. Learn all you can, be hungry for knowledge, you never know when you might need it!

Favourite sports: Anything with an endurance component. Active in running, cycling (road & MTB), kayaking & canoeing, cross-country & downhill skiing, tennis. I enjoy any mountain / wilderness activity, particularly exploring in extreme environments. Love watching rugby.

Sports teams or clubs you work with: Nothing in a professional capacity, but I help coach my son’s U11 rugby side.

I am a qualified Phase IV cardiac rehabilitation exercise instructor & I have been running an exercise class for people who have had heart attacks or cardiac surgery for the last 5 years. This active involvement with people, exercise & chronic disease has been a rich educational experience & has provided me with first-hand experience of implementing a positive lifestyle change - & you can actually witness the difference it can make in older people’s lives. It is also very rewarding – they are very nice.
