About Us

Centre for Sports StudiesThe Centre for Sports Studies is a fast-growing department based on the University of Kent's Medway Campus. We aim to be one of Britain's premier academic sports departments. We offer a range of specialist facilities and opportunities for our students in order to provide a first-class experience.

The Centre offers several undergraduate courses; BSc (hons) in Sports Therapy; BSc (hons) in Sports Science; a BA in Sports and Exercise Management and we are currently validating a degree in Sport and Exercise for Health. At postgraduate level we offer an Postgraduate Diploma and an MSc in Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation. We also offer graduates the chance to study for an MPhil/PhD in Sports Science or Sports Therapy. We are also developing a Professional Doctorate in Sport Exercise and Health for launch in September 2010.

The Centre for Sports Studies is largely based within the Medway Building and here there is a wide range of specialist facilities for our staff and students use. These include a 12 couch teaching clinic, where modules on the various degree programmes are delivered. The Centre also operates a commercial sports injury and rehabilitation clinic on campus which is serviced by staff and past graduates. The clinic also provides students the opportunity to work with their own clients under the supervision of the clinic staff.

The Centre for Sport Studies also hosts a state of the art Sports and Human Performance Testing Laboratory. Equipment includes testing treadmills, cycle ergometers, an isokinetic dynamometer, blood testing and gas analysis equipment. Students are given the opportunity to gain experience of working in the laboratory environment during their course; and the best Sports Science students may choose a dissertation topic which enables them to conduct a study in this environment. The Centre also has a rehabilitation gym with a range of cardiovascular and fixed resistance equipment. There are dedicated computer facilities for students with sport specific software including dietary and motion analysis. Students also have access to private study resources to enable them to reinforce learning; including key texts, videos, DVD’s and small testing equipment.

Finally, the Centre is expanding and is now opening new specialist laboratories and clinics in Medway Park. Due to be launched in Easter 2010 Medway Park will be a regional Centre of Sporting Excellence. The Centre for Sports Studies' staff and students will benefit from £500,000 of new specialist equipment too. You can read more about this at http://www.sportsciences.co.uk/medway-park
